Another record: Prevc's skis fetch record EUR 45,000 in charity auction
A pair of skis donated by the champion 23-year-old ski jumper to the Friends of Youth charity organisation for the Botrstvo child sponsorship project was auctioned off for a record EUR 45,000 on Friday.
The live auction on public broadcaster's Val 202 radio channel saw bids rise from a starting price of EUR 360 on Monday. On Friday, bidding resumed at EUR 14,250.
Four bidders made sure that the price quickly broke the previous record from 2014 of EUR 15,100 for a Chelsea jersey signed by the team which won the 2012 Champions League.
The highest bid for the skis was made by director of hardware retailer Bauhaus in Slovenia Samo Kupljen, who was a top bidder already at EUR 40,000, before improving the bid to the winning bid.
The Friends of Youth project, which runs with the help of Val 202, provides a monthly sponsorship of EUR 30 to underprivileged children. The sum obtained from the skis will provide annual sponsorship to 125 children.
The winner of the auction will be presented the skis from Prevc personally on 22 March at an event in Congress Square in Ljubljana.
The skis had been used by Prevc in his record-setting World Cup season, which saw him set a new mark for single season wins at 14 in Planica on Thursday.
"Skis are especially important because they give a ski jumper wings and once you have found a pair that suits you have them with you the entire season and take care of them. This pair is really great!," Peter said as he made the donation.
