Slovenian handballers looking to secure berth for Rio Olympics
Slovenia are facing European Championship runners-up Spain, hosts Sweden and Iran.
Slovenia will be looking to secure their third appearance at Summer Olympics after taking 8th place in Sydney in 2000 and 11th in Athens in 2004.
The national team will open the tournament against Spain on Friday, which the players see as the best chance to finish among top two teams in the four team bracket and secure qualification for Rio.
"A very difficult tournament is awaiting us in Sweden. I think we have the best chance of making it to the Olympics by beating Spain, which is why we have to prepare ourselves really well and look for a win on the very first day," said centre back Sebastian Skube.
Slovenia last played Spain in the group stage of the European Championship in Poland in January, earning a 24:24 draw.
Head coach Veselin Vujović is satisfied with the shape of his players heading for the qualifying tournament. "All of them believe that we can make a good result in Sweden," he told the press.
Slovenia will play hosts Sweden on Saturday and Iran on Sunday.
