Bavčar was nominated by MEP Lojze Peterle (NSi/EPP) and his motion was endorsed by six other Slovenian MEPs.

The award is conferred on individuals, organisations, projects and initiatives that promote cross-border cooperation and understanding in the EU.

The nomination describes Bavčar as having made a "unique and rich contribution to art and literature that transcends boundaries."

Bavčar, 69, has been blind since age 11 but has nevertheless made a career as a photographer. He has also been an outspoken advocate for the blind.

He is one of 50 recipients of the title Citizen of Europe for this year. The awards will be conferred on 12-13 October in Brussels, the European Parliament said.
