The project is part of the Ljubljana city municipality's efforts to clean up Ljubljana's air.

The Avant2go car-sharing model aims at reducing harmful emissions - its electric vehicles can save up to 100,000 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

Mayor Zoran Janković believes it is an important step towards saving the planet, which puts Ljubljana on the pedestal of Europe.

50 vehicles will be available for rent in the first year of the car-sharing scheme's introduction and new cars will be added if need be, he told the press.

The majority of the car-sharing stations will be located near the BTC shopping district, while one of them will be at the city's Technology Park.

The Avant2go system lets users drive the vehicles at any time of the day in Ljubljana and its surroundings.

The rental cost will depend on the distance travelled and the time during which the vehicle is used. Booking and payment will be made entirely through the mobile application.

One of the advantages the Ljubljana city municipality sees in the car-sharing model is that the costs of registration, insurance, fuel, maintenance and the motorway car stickers are all included in the rental cost.

The project was presented on Wednesday at the Ljubljana City Museum as part of events related to the declaration of Europe's Green Capital 2018.

Janković was especially happy with Ljubljana being the first and only city to be commended by the European Commission two years ago for implementing the most changes in the right direction, one of them being the new car-sharing model.

Public Administration Minister Boris Koprivnikar added that the scheme proved Slovenia was an innovative and green country setting an example to other cities around the world.
