Overnight stays up 4% in first half of 2016

Slovenian tourists made 1.7 million overnight stays in the first half of 2016, up 1% from the same period last year. Foreign tourists, meanwhile, accounted for 2.6 million overnight stays, up 7% from the same period in 2015.

Almost 1.7 million tourist arrivals were recorded, up 6% from the same period last year. The number of domestic tourist arrivals rose by 4%, while an 8% rise was seen in the number of foreign tourist arrivals.

In June, foreign tourists generated 275,364 arrivals and 651,193 overnight stays, an increase compared to the same month last year, while Slovenian tourists accounted for 107,349 arrivals and 324,719 overnight stays in June, which is a decrease compared to June 2015.

In annual comparison, significantly more overnight stays was generated by tourists from Israel (+48%), the US (+38%) and Italy (+21%) while there were less overnight stays by those from the UK (-1%), Austria (-15%) and Germany (-17%).

Almost 39,000 units in various types of accommodation with almost 108,000 tourist beds were available in Slovenia in June 2016.

Most of the tourist beds were in hotels (38%), camping sites (22%) and in private accommodations (7%).

The highest number of overnight stays in June 2016 (26% or more than 255,000) was recorded in spa resorts, followed by seaside resorts (25% or almost 243,000).

Compared to June 2015, overnight stays in spa resorts increased by 1%, while they decreased by 1% in mountain and seaside resorts and by 3% in Ljubljana.

Most of the tourist overnight stays (16%) were recorded in the coastal town of Piran, followed by Ljubljana (13%) and the lakeside resort of Bled (9%).
