The president of the Modern Centre Party (SMC), which is part of ALDE, said in video address to the meeting in Warsaw that it was time to say "no to nationalism, to isolationism or internal borders that are dividing us" and thereby preserve the basic four freedoms, the rule of law and human rights.

The congress, which was also addressed by Slovenia's EU Commissioner Violeta Bulc, is attended by SMC deputy group head Simona Kustec Lipicer, as well as MP Mitja Horvat and the head of the SMC's international office Gašper Koprivšek, who is to become ALDE's treasury.

An election reform is to be confirmed by ALDE at the congress that will give more delegates to the SMC in the ALDE council, making it one of the strongest in terms of election clout.

The SMC said the fact that the party had one of the seven liberal prime ministers in Europe, one of five liberal commissioners and that it had been entrusted with organising the ALDE council meeting in Ljubljana in June 2017 clearly showed the respect the SMC and Slovenia enjoyed in the European political arena.
