Almost all extremist groups from eastern Africa to souteastern Asia are using internet to spread their ideas and as an instrument in armed combat, said the Student Organisation of the University of Primorsko, the founder of the centre.

Project leader Nina Markovič pointed out that there were an estimated 30,000 foreign fighters from 115 countries, 5,000 of those from western Europe, fighting for Islamic State.

Terrorist organisations aim their online propaganda at youths who do not feel accepted by their environment, and pass themselves off as accepting and supporting. The youths do not realize they are being manipulated and exploited until it is too late.

Their project will also include secondary school workshops in other Slovenian regions aimed at raising awareness of online manipulation, radicalisation, hate speech, intolerance and violence.

Just last year Slovenian citizen Rok Žavbi was apprehended in Ljubljana for recruiting and training foreign IS fighters, while Boštjan Skubic and three other Slovenians were suspected of having fought for IS in 2014.
