The Italian authorities will be checking passengers at main roads, railway stations and rural areas and are warning of possible traffic congestion at border crossings.

This is the second neighbouring country in the Schengen area that is introducing border checks after Austria opted for the measure amidst the refugee crisis. At the beginning of the month, one last six-month extension of the measure was approved by the European Commission.
