On World Refugee Day, focus on perception
A ceremony at Prešeren Square in the centre of Ljubljana organised by the Institute for African Studies will attempt to acquaint the public with the refugee experience and present best integration practices.
The Slovenian Philanthropy, an NGO, will shed light on media depictions of refugees with a debate featuring journalists and media experts.
There are currently 241 asylum seekers in Slovenia, most of them from Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey and Iran. Of some 400 refugees who have already been granted asylum, most are Syrian nationals.
Asylum seekers are often traumatised and NGOs as well as the government migration office have said they should get more psychosocial assistance. Once granted asylum, refugees often have trouble finding a job.
