Slovenia's tourism policy will be built on the presentation of Slovenia as an active, green and healthy destination.

The strategy deals with reorganisation of macroregions and tourism products, institutional and legal framework, accommodation, development of tourism infrastructure, human resources, spatial planning, natural and cultural assets, and small and medium-sized companies.

Economic Development and Technology Minister Zdravko Počivalšek said the most important move would be forming four macro regions: the Alpine, Mediterranean, the Thermal Pannonian region and central Slovenia with Ljubljana.

He also stressed the importance of investment policy, which he believes is crucial for the implementation of goals in tourism.

Government officials pointed out that tourism was a significantly inter-ministerial activity, as virtually every ministry affects its development. All ministries should therefore be actively involved in drawing up the final version of the strategy, the Government Communication Office said.

The government is expected to discuss and endorse the final proposal in September.

Slovenia recorded almost 4.2 million visitors last year, who generated almost 11 million overnight stays. The foreign inflow from tourism reached EUR 2.35bn, Počivalšek noted.
