It is the first major infrastructural project in Slovenia to be using guarantees from the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI).

With the project, worth a total of EUR 105m, will replace the existing tolling system for cargo vehicles on a total of 610 kilometres of motorways and expressways in Slovenia, based on toll booths, with electronic tolling.

The new system is expected to contribute to improving waiting times for cargo vehicles, reduce consumption of fuel and noise emissions, the European Commission said. Works on setting up the necessary infrastructure are already under way.

In accordance with the new sustainable mobility solutions, the system is expected to enable tolling at various rates depending on vehicle category and emission class. It will include a central system for integrated support services, a network of customers services and a system for detection and prosecution of fraud.

The project is one of the 63 projects approved on Tuesday by the EIB, the Commission said, adding that support schemes in the total amount of EUR 12.4bn would be intended to projects related to railway, road, air and maritime transport and renewable sources and energy security in Europe.
