Upper Soča Valley tourism booming
Bovec is recording a record summer season for a third year in a row, with a 44% rise in the number of overnight stays reported for the first half of the year.
Almost 100,000 overnight stays were recorded in July alone, which is by 22,000 more than in the same month last year. The figures for August are also expected to be better than last year.
Janko Humar of the local tourism organisation explained that it was actually almost impossible to get accommodation in Bovec in the summer without a booking in advance.
The average duration of stay is however still short, with visitors staying for two and a half days on average.
Germans are the most numerous visitors of the town situated on the beautiful Alpine river Soča, followed by domestic quests and the Czechs.
The local infrastructure is overburdened because of the influx of tourists, but local authorities believe that the problem is fixable.
"Every guest is welcome here. We will try to eliminate the problems brought by tourists visits this summer even before the next tourist season starts," Bovec Mayor Valter Mlekuž has told the STA.
"We have been fighting for a long time for the results that were finally achieved this year, and we are happy that the season is successful as it is," he added.
