Maribor to be European City of Sport 2018

Maribor will collect its title at an award ceremony on 6 December in Brussels. Last year, Krško also held the title European City of Sport.

The city hopes to promote itself as a sports destination and encourage the residents to do more sports, according to a press release from Mayor Andrej Fištravec.

The press release quoted ACES Europe General Secretary Hugo Alonso as saying in his letter to Fištravec that Maribor was a good example of a city providing sports opportunities to everybody, serving to boost health, integration, education and respect.

Maribor will host several sports events next year, including the FIMBA European Maxibasketball Championship, the AETF Senior and Junior European Taekwon-Do Championships, and the Ice Hockey Women's World Championship Division II.

Fištravec said that a detailed calendar of sports events would be released for 2018 and the project would be promoted in Slovenia and abroad. The title European City of Sport does not provide additional funds to the cities that hold it.

In addition to Maribor, the title will be held in 2018 by Aosta, Bacau, Banska Bystrica, Bristol, Cagliari, Gondomar, Jurmala, La Chaux de Fonds, Mollet del Valles, Noordwijk, Olomouc, Oostende, Pesaro, Stara Zagora and Vicenza.
