The convention is the first binding document to determine at an Europe-wide level an extensive legal framework for protecting women against all forms of violence. It sets down procedures for the prevention and prosecution of such violence.

The document, adopted by the CoE Committee of Ministers on 7 April this year, also puts in place an international mechanism for the oversight of the implementation of the convention at national level, the Foreign Ministry wrote in a press release.

The Slovenian government announced the signing on 21 April, saying that gender equality, the preventing and combating of violence against women and domestic violence were included among the government's priorities.
