The only chance for Slovenia to enter an additional qualifying round would have been defeating Scotland, while Malta would have to beat Slovakia.

This did not happen, however, as Slovakia defeated Malta 3:0 (1:0) at home today, and advanced to the additional qualifying round.

Both goals for Slovenia tonight were scored by Roman Bezjak, while Leigh Griffiths and Robert Snodgrass scored for Scotland.

The Scots will also have wait for their dream of appearing at a Football World Cup to come true after they last played at one in 1998.

The last time Slovenia played at a World Cup was in 2010.

Meanwhile, England from Group F already qualified for the tournament in Russia after defeating Slovenia 1:0 earlier this week.

Slovenia's head coach Srečko Katanec announced his retirement after the game with England, but indicated yesterday he might change his mind if Slovenia qualify.

Today's match was also symbolic for Boštjan Cesar, who became the first Slovenia football player to play for the Slovenian national team for the 100th time.

His debut was in February 2003, when Slovenia lost to Switzerland. The Slovenian Football Association honoured him today with a special sculpture.
