"The Walk of Peace Foundation gave the idea for individuals and institutions along the entire Isonzo Front to light candles at cemeteries, ossuaries and other landmarks known from WWI," foundation boss Maša Klavora has told the STA.

The main commemoration for all soldiers who fought on the front, which ran from the Julian Alps in the north to the Adriatic Sea in the south, will be held in Kobarid (Caporetto in Italian) with representatives from other countries, mostly Hungary, Germany and Italy.

A memorial run will also take place, with runners from different countries running into the north-western town on 24 October.

Even before entering Kobarid, the runners will lay wreaths at the German ossuary in Tolmin, the Austro-Hungarian cemetery on Loče and at the Italian ossuary in Kobarid.

A group of Hungarian runners who have embarked on the journey left Budapest as early as 12 October.

Commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the end of one of the bloodiest fronts of WWI will also feature representatives of the defence ministries from Slovenia, Hungary and Italy.

Even before the centenary, the Kobarid Museum will hold a museum day on 21 October and open an exhibition, entitled Kobarid - Caporetto - Karfreit 1917. The opening address will be delivered by Trieste author, reporter and researcher Paolo Rumiz.

The Walk of Peace Foundation will host an exhibition of the Slovenian Museum of Contemporary History featuring photos of the Battle of Caporetto, which "supplements the Kobarid Museum exhibition", says Klavora.

Meanwhile, Italy will organise the laying of wreaths at the Italian ossuary in Kobarid on 28 October.
