Ljubljana hosting fans of Rubik's cube
Primary and secondary school pupils will get the chance to learn from Rubik's cube masters Jernej Omulc, Niki Placsko, Oliver Prege and Petra Kobal Vogrinec, the head of the Balassi Institute, Biborka Molnar-Gabor, told the STA.
A total of 40 participants from Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Croatia and France will compete in various categories, including the original 3x3x3, and Megaminx, Pyraminx and 5x5x5. In the original category, competitors are trying to break Staš Zupan's record of 6.90 seconds from last year.
"Every year, a new record is set, and we expect a new one at the Balassi Institute this year too. We expect it to stand at around six seconds," Molnar-Gabor said before the event.
The current record for solving the famous puzzle is held by American Patrick Ponce, who solved Rubik's cube in 4.96 seconds in August.
The Hungarian cultural centre in Ljubljana decided to host the competition to observe World Science Day with something popular both in Hungary and Slovenia. "Today, the cube is more popular than ever with its new design and new competition categories," Molnar-Gabor added.
Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Erno Rubik.
