The possibilities for pleasant bicycling on marked cycling trails in Slovenia are enormous. Perhaps the most pleasant trips can be done by mountain bike which has become increasingly popular among young people in Slovenia. Because of its diversity the exploration of Slovenia can start in the Karst region in the Mediterranean Slovenia, continue across the Alps to the Upper Savinja valley, below Mount Peca in Koroska (Mountain Bike Park), and in the Pohorje mountain range. Surroundings of natural spas offer an exceptional cycling experience (Prekmurje Bicycle Trails, In the Sunny Foothills of Goricko, Brezice Bicycle Trail). There are also trails along the Drava River (Drava Bicycle Trail and Jantara (Jade Bicycle Trail) and the Kolpa River (Kolpa River Bicycle Trail). A holiday by bicycle is usually an exciting and memorable adventure so why not hit the road on a pedal and try out some cycling trips? For a start, let us take a look at some trips around the regions Notranjska and Gorenjska, which surround the capital Ljubljana. The Stajerska region is also represented with the major town Maribor and its surroundings. The Notranjska region - Logatec The Notranjska region with the major town Postojna lies in the transition from Primorska to Central Slovenia with world-famous karst phenomena also known under the term "Notranjska Karst Triangle". This is the area between the Postojna basin, Planina polje, and Cerknica polje with dissapearing Cerknica Lakes. The specific karst phenomena can be observed in numerous caves (e.g. The Postojna Cave), sinks, and forested karst plateaus. In the future, cyclists will be able to enjoy trails in the Sneznik Regional Park as well; at the moment, these exist only around Logatec, Cerknica, and Pivka. Logaska kolesarska transverzala (Logatec Cycling Trail), maintained by the local biking association, starts in town Logatec located 39 km South-West of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, on the main Ljubljana - Trieste road and railway line. It is 90 km long and can be divided in up to a 3-day trip. there are two parts of the trail-the southern and the northern. The latter, presenting Ljubljansko Barje, is considered to be in some parts more demanding due to some long uphill rides whereas the southern part is more suitable for leisurely family trips. The Gorenjska region This region is spread out in North-West Slovenia, surrounding the town Kranj. The starting point is Pokljuka, located about 70 kilometres North-West of Ljubljana and 9 kilometres north-west of Bled. You can get there from Bled via Gorje by mountain bike or by car. The family cycling trail starts at the Rudno polje barracks and ends at the picturesque Reciska planina. Off the trail, Planina Javornik and Pokljuska soteska are also worth visiting. Radovna The Radovna River Valley is located 50 km north-west of Ljubljana; it is also accessible by bicycle from Bled or Mojstrana. This is an ideal destination for a leisurely trip into the isolated mountainous countryside. A modest historic power station, an abandoned old mill, remnants of the carbon mine, mighty Jenko's linden tree and a burnt out homestead left by the Second World War, all this can be encountered in a relatively small area. Stefanja Gora Its location is 30 km north of Ljubljana, at the foot of Kamniske Alpe. Trips can be started in Ljubljana or Kranj by bike, car or bus to Cerklje (ski-bus to Krvavec in winter). The plateau of Stefanja gora is a great destination for a short hiking or biking trip. Church of Sveti Stefan can be either a destination or a starting point for an ascent to Krvavec known also as ski centre. We can also enjoy the view of the Strmol castle and Velesovo Monastery in the valley below. The Stajerska region - Jarenina Stajerska is the second largest Slovenian region which covers the eastern part of the country; its central town is Maribor. Jarenina is located 15 km north-east of Maribor. We can take a train from Maribor to Pesnica or reach it by car. This is an ideal cycling or hiking destination.Taking the regional road to Gornja Radgona and Murska Sobota, we find the Jarenina valley, a part of Pesnica shire. The Wine cellar Jareninski dvor is located behind the township of Jarenina. If you are after some views, you have to ascend to the top of the hill called Vajgen. Hidden at its foot lies shady Mrzli studenec (Cold Spring). Pohorje Pohorje massif is a part of the Central Alps. The centre of Pohorje bicycling is located at the upper station of the gondola lift from Maribor. Here, the Martin Cycling Village is situated with beginning of many forest roads across Pohorje. Over 200 km of marked trails represent quite a challenge with downhill and uphill trails even for the most prepared. At the top (1000 m), there are pleasant trails leading through the Pohorje forests along beautiful and interesting landscape for both comfortable family cycling and demanding sport rides. Bicycling in Slovenia offers many opportunities to explore the breath-taking landscape faraway from crowded urban areas. Discovering Slovenia by bike will maybe lead you to become a true cycling addict.
