Slovenian companies increasingly hiring workers abroad
There were 61,422 foreigners working in Slovenia in 2016, according to the Statistics Office. Most of them, 48,891, were from non-EU countries.
They mostly came from Bosnia and Herzegovina (28,998), followed by Serbia (7,127) and Croatia (5,870). More than 1,000 also came from Macedonia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Italy, Russia and Ukraine.
Most of the foreigners worked in construction (15,514 persons), manufacturing (12,893) and in transportation and storage services (10,202).
In the first ten months of 2017, a total of 75,963 foreign workers were registered, 59,403 of whom were from non-EU countries, which is a record high.
The biggest increase in the number of foreigners working in Slovenia was recorded in 2007, when their number was up by 14,211 compared the year before.
In contrast, the biggest drop occurred in 2009, when the number of foreign workers decreased by 7,211 compared to the year before.
