Civil initiative to rally against scaremongering
A "broad, informal and open coalition of individuals and civil initiatives" has joined forces under the No Fear Coalition banner because they do not accept the politics of hatred, said Rina Pleteršek of the Iskra (Spark) student organisation.
Vesna Leskošek, the dean of the Ljubljana Faculty of Social Work, said the rally was aimed at pointing out to parties competing in the election that people want non-authoritarian politics and hateless public debate.
Moreover, the organisers of the rally strive for a society of inclusion, solidarity and compassion, for respecting women's rights, including the undeniable right to abortion, and an end to the criminalisation of migrations, among other things.
Dobranić of Danes Je Nov Dan, an organisation promoting social awareness, believes that the rally is "not only appropriate but also necessary, because inciting hatred and dividing people has become the key instrument in the fight for power".
No political parties are behind the organisation of the rally, which 1,500 people on Facebook said would attend, he added and said that it was up to every individual to judge who incites hatred.
"I am certain that there are people on the left side of the political spectrum who say things that are not the nicest," Dobranić added when quizzed if the rally was directed above all at rightist parties.
"But nobody can deny that certain political groups do it much much more than others."
Several speeches will be held at Ljubljana's Republic Square on Thursday afternoon, including by Hungarian philosopher Gaspar Miklos Tamas.
