Slovenia bids to host European Youth Olympic Festival in 2023
The costs of hosting the EYOF 2023 are estimated at EUR 9.38m, of which EUR 3m would go for the accommodation and EUR 2.6m for infrastructure.
According to a feasibility study carried out by the Ljubljana Faculty of Economics, infrastructure was identified as the main shortcoming.
Koper does not have a proper track-and-field stadium and there could be some problems with swimming venues.
However, Blaž Perko, the Slovenian Olympic Committee (OKS) secretary general, told the press on Thursday the municipality was planning to build a swimming pool regardless of the EYOF.
Athletes would compete in nine sports plus one as selected by the organiser, with sport climbing being identified as the most suitable discipline.
The best period to hold the Olympic youth festival would be from 18 to 26 July when there is little rain.
Apart from renovating some old venues and building a few new ones, the organiser would also have to set up an Olympic village for 4,000 athletes.
OKS president Bogdan Gabrovec said the idea to host the EYOF, "the top event Slovenia could host under the Olympic circles", was given several years ago.
If Koper wins the candidacy, this would be the second time that the country hosts the EYOF.
In January 2003, Bled hosted the winter version of the competition, bringing together 1,242 athletes from 41 countries, who competed in seven sports.
