SIJ takes over Harsco's slag processing business
Harsco Minerali has so far processed slag, a waste material from metal production, for SIJ Acroni, now the company will perform this activity itself.
SIJ Acroni has taken over both Harsco's activity and equipment, and invited all Harsco employees to join the company.
Tibor Šimonka, member of the board of parent company SIJ, said on Wednesday the move was "an important step towards efficient and ecological production."
Harsco Minerali processed 200,000 tonnes of slag for SIJ last year. The company mainly processed old slag deposits but new slag is created on an ongoing basis during steel production.
The processing products are used as inputs for asphalt and other engineering materials including insulation, and some products can be recycled for steel production.
Harsco Minerali posted sales of EUR 12m for 2016, the latest year for which data are available, and a net loss of EUR 222,000.
SIJ's group revenue exceeded a billion euro last year and its net profit amounted to EUR 15m.
