Newly appointed PM to continue government-building talks

Šarec said after his appointment last Friday that a lot of effort would be required to put together a ministerial team that would successfully pass parliamentary committee hearings.

The Marjan Šarec List (LMŠ), the SocDems, the Modern Centre Party (SMC), the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) and the Alenka Bratušek Party (SAB) started the talks on the distribution of ministries at the beginning of last week but no final decision has been made yet.

So far it is clear only that the presidents of all coalition parters will hold cabinet posts except SD head Dejan Židan, who will be put forward for National Assembly speaker. MPs Tina Heferle (LMŠ) and Monika Gregorčič (SMC) will be put forward for deputy speakers as MPs resume their session on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the status of the Left, which made a cooperation agreement with the coalition parties, is still unclear. While some legal experts as well as the parliamentary legal service claim the agreement rendered it a coalition party, the Left insist it will stay in the opposition but does not rule out the possibility of holding some posts of state secretaries.

Šarec needs to put forward a list of candidates for the ministerial posts by 3 September. A vote on the candidates is scheduled in parliament for mid-September.
