Top culture prizes go to film maker, costume designer

Born in 1940, Robar Dorin is an award-winning filmmaker who has used his films as a means to express social criticism. "He has fought for the rights of the weak", according to the prize panel of the Slovenian Directors' Association, which honoured him with the lifetime achievement award last year.

He studied philosophy and comparative literature in Ljubljana and screen writing, directing, camera and film editing at Columbia College in Chicago, US.

He founded one of the first independent production firms in the former Yugoslavia in the 1980s and served as the head of the Slovenian Film Fund between 1998 and 2002.

Robar Dorin has worked on at least 30 documentaries. He has received a number of awards for Veter v Mreži (The Windhunter, 1989) and has enjoyed great acclaim for Opre Roma, a trilogy on a Roma village near Novo Mesto spanning three decades.

Adžić Ursulov has created costumes for more well over 100 theatre productions and several films, and designed sets for about 40 theatre productions. She has worked with all major theatre houses in the former Yugoslavia and many in Italy, France, Austria, the UK and Germany.

Born in 1950, she studied arts in Belgrade and started working in Slovenia in the early 1980s. She has earned a number of prizes for her work and was ranked among the top ten set designers in Europe by Theaterheute, a renowned German magazine, in 1994.
