Disappointing End to a Disappointing Season

This was Olimpija's worst season in modern history, as it was also eliminated from the prestigious Euroleague after the preliminary rounds. Since 1991, Olimpija regularly qualified for the play-offs; it became the Goodyear champion in 2002 and had qualified for the Goodyear league's Final Four tournament at every attempt. The Goodyear league was established in 2001 in order to revive the legendary Yugoslav basketball league, which used to be the strongest national basketball competition in Europe. It started with teams from Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and even Maccabi Tel Aviv played in 2003/04. It took some time before teams from Serbia finally joined the competition but it now seems that they have taken a tight rein on the trophy - as was the case in the old Yugoslavia. Namely, the top four teams, Hemofarm, Partizan, Reflex and Crvena zvezda all come from Serbia. However, despite the strength of the competition, the Goodyear league has failed to ignite the public's imagination and attendance at most games, including the final series, was well below expectations.
