They were selected from among ten candidates, seven male and three female, who applied to a call issued by the Justice Ministry in June 2018. Marko Ilešič, who served alongside Prek during the last term, did not vie for another term.

Pahor submitted his choices to the National Assembly today after talking to all deputy group heads and acquiring the position of the Judicial Council and the government, Pahor's office said in a press release.

Both candidates will also present themselves to the public on Wednesday at the Presidential Palace in Ljubljana.

If appointed, Prek will serve his third term in Luxembourg between 2019 and 2025. Before his first appointment to the court, Prek had served as a member of Slovenia's EU accession talks team.

Pavliha teaches at the Portorož-based Faculty for Maritime Studies and Transport, the Ljubljana faculties of law and economy and the Malta International Maritime Law Institute.

He also served as minister of transport and an MP and was honoured with the Jurist of the Year title by the Jurists' Association in 2001.
