Bloomberg compiled the index based on data from the World Health Organisation, World Bank and the UN, taking into consideration factors such as life expectancy, tobacco use, obesity and environmental factors, including access to clean water and sanitation.

The top ten ranking nations include six from Europe. Spain and Italy are followed by Iceland in third, Switzerland in fifth, Sweden in sixth and Norway in ninth spot. Japan placed fourth, Australia 7th, Singapore 8th, Israel 10th and the US 35th.

Slovenia is a spot behind Germany and a spot ahead of Denmark. Of the other nations from the region of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia ranks highest, in 31st.
