The company's CEO Peter Čas told the press that sustainability and energy-efficiency were the company's key strategic goals in deciding which technologies to use in production.

The glass producer started developing innovative technologies last year to reduce the use of natural gas by 10-15%, significantly decreasing its carbon footprint.

They also managed to reduce carbon emissions by 30% in their table glass unit and by 10% in the packaging glass division.

The new solar project will partly replace fossil fuels with hydrogen production, which generates minimal carbon emissions, thus enabling a hydrogen-based way of glass melting.

The company's photovoltaic system includes 614 solar panels and will produce 177 Megawatt hours of electricity per year, leading to a decrease of carbon emissions by 80 tonnes.

The cost of the project was estimated at EUR 172,000.

GEN-I CEO Robert Golob said that they endeavoured to support their business partners to become more eco-friendly. "Nowadays, setting up a solar power plant represents self-sufficiency and, in the long term, a financial impact for us, our planet, and descendants," said Golob.

He believes that the Slovenian industry needs to step up its game not only in the case of digitalisation but also to carry out green transformation.
