Trend of increasing number of foreign tourists snapped in May
May was unseasonably wet and cold, which is probably the main reason for the number of foreign tourists dropping to 383,000 and the number of overnight stays they generated to 841,000.
According to the Statistics Office, the overall number of tourists in Slovenia in May stood at 500,000, which was almost the same as in the same month in 2018. The number of overnight stays meanwhile dropped by almost 4% to around 1.1 million.
The number of domestic tourists was actually up by 12% to 119,000, and they generated 5% more overnight stays (almost 308,000).
Germans generated the most overnight stays among foreign tourists (more than 12%), closely followed by Austrians (12%). More than 7% of all tourists in May were Italians, followed by Americans (5%) and British (almost 5%).
However, the number of overnight stays generated by Germans also decreased the most, by 29%, followed by tourists from Austria (15%), United Kingdom (4%) and Italy (3%). The number for the US citizens was meanwhile up by 8%.
The trend has remained positive in the first five months of the year though, with Slovenian tourist facilities recording a total of 1.9 million arrivals and more than 4.6 million overnight stays, up 4% and 3% year-on-year, respectively.
