This winter, there were a variety of indoor entertainments, but the first ray of sunshine and the first warm breeze bring the events out to the streets. It all begins in May with the largest youth festival in Slovenia, Teden mladih. Culture, education, sports and unlimited fun are the essential components of this event. In just nine days, the festival hosts more than one hundred events and attracts over 40,000 visitors from all around Slovenia. The older generation can satisfy their need for culture through a four-week international multicultural festival called Carniola. It will present open air opera, pop concerts, classical music, folklore, street theatre and a wide selection of events for children, too. The festival brings life to the streets; there is no larger or better festival in all of the Gorenjska region. At the end of August, there is the three-day Kranjska noc, also named Kranfest, which has expanded into quite a festival over the years. Each year, the dancing crowd celebrates this local event with live concerts late into the night. When speaking of culture, we must acknowledge the work of the alternative cultural society, Izbruh. They organize many cultural events in Kranj's former winter swimming pool. The location is specific - there is a certain urban and alternative air about it. Youth culture is also represented by Mladinski kulturni center (the Centre for Youth Culture) and Klub studentov Kranj (Club of Students in Kranj). At the beginning of fall 2006, Kranj will gain an important cultural centre called Artist, where all aspects of culture will be displayed. Kranj is also becoming a town of many sports. With the additions of the indoor olympic swimming pool in 1995 and the National Nordic Centre with a ski jump (K-99 m) in 2002, Kranj is hosting many major international sports events, such as the European Water Polo Championship. And at the end of this January, the Junior World Ski Championships will take place in Kranj and the nearby town of Medvode. For culture, sports, education or simply having fun, Kranj is certainly a viable source inside Slovenia.
