In his debut appearance in a Grand Tour Race, the 20-year old UAE Team Emirates rider became only a third Slovenian with a stage win at the tour of Spain after Borut Božič and Matej Mohorič.

In the finishing moments of the 94.4 kilometre stage that took the riders up five ascents in Andorra, Pogačar beat the race leader, Columbian Nairo Quintana (Movistar), and Roglič, Jumbo-Visma captain.

Riding behind Quintana, Pogačar squeezed past him on the last ascent as the Colombian received assistance from the Spanish teammate Marc Soler.

"This stage was incredible. I was looking at it since I started. Yesterday when I saw the weather I was happy that it was going to rain," Pogačar commented.

"I tried to follow the attacks and I went full gas on the gravel section. From then on, it all went great," added Pogačar, who won the Tour of California in May.

Quintana finished the stage 23 seconds behind to take the race leader's red jersey. After a fall on the gravel section, Roglič finished 48 seconds behind Pogačar to move to the second place overall.

Overall, Riglič has a 6-second lag behind Quintana. After a day of rest, he will be the top favourite for a victory in Tuesday's time-trial stage in France's Pau.

Pogačar advanced to fifth overall with a time lag of 1:42 minutes.
