Deloitte and Adria demystified

The Slovenia Times published as follows: "Adria Airways hired Deloitte consultants at a cost of EUR 400.000 to advise them on ways to extricate themselves from their difficulties. There are also a few difficulties with this: first, the CEO of Deloitte, Peter Grasek, was also a member of Adria Airways' supervisory board until last November. Second, if Grasek's claims that he constantly warned the management of Adria that it needed to make radical changes to its operations are true, then why was the hiring of Deloitte even necessary? Last but not least, Grasek approved Lucovnik's extremely generous redundancy package. All sounds a bit shady?" The following are the facts which in my opinion should have been checked prior to publishing this article and jumping to unfounded conclusions: Peter Grasek, Chairman of Deloitte Slovenia, was the president of the Supervisory board of Adria Airways only until 11th July 2005 after which date Mr Brane Grosl took over this role. Adria Airways never "hired Deloitte at a cost of EUR 400.000 to advise them on ways to extricate themselves from their difficulties". The truth is that on 9th September 2005 (when Peter Grasek was no longer member of the Supervisory board of Adria Airways) the CEO of Adria Airways, Mr Brane Lucovnik, requested an Executive board strategy summary for the airline. This was delivered on 18th September 2005 at a cost of EUR 7.500. On 23rd December 2005 (when Peter Grasek was no longer member of the Supervisory board of Adria Airways) the new CEO of Adria Airway Mr Iztok Malacic requested Deloitte for a turnaround proposal, which was sent to the airline management on 22nd December 2005. Deloitte offered to restore the profitability of Adria Airways in two years and based its remuneration in part on a success fee. On 2nd February 2006, Deloitte received a letter from the CEO of Adria Airways that they shall not order the turnaround project. The contract defining the "extremely generous redundancy package to Mr Brane Lucovnik" was signed on 13th November 2001 and 13th July 2004.The redundancy package was not extremely generous but rather much lower than the levels recommended by law and the Manager association of Slovenia. In addition, I find it necessary to state that Deloitte and I, Peter Grasek, always act professionally and always diligently evaluate any potential conflict of interest prior to engaging any project and contractual obligation. We have acted strictly in accordance with these principles, also in the case of Adria Airways.
