The feature-length film will be directed by award-winning director, writer and basketball fan Goran Vojnović, the Slovenian Basketball Association announced on Tuesday.

It will be produced by production house December in collaboration with the Basketball Association and media outlet PRO Plus, which operates private broadcaster POP TV.

It will focus on the victory of the powerful Eurobasket-winning team, which among others featured stars such as Goran Dragić and Luka Dončić plus coach Igor Kokoškov.

Extensive archive material will be used, including videos made by fans, whom the association invited to share them so that Vojnović could pick some for the documentary.

The film will highlight all stages leading to the success, including the training camp of the rejuvenated national team, its first victories, a successful start to the EuroBasket campaign and the incredible wins over Latvia and Spain as well as the epic final with Serbia. It will round off with the euphoria which captured the nation.

"The 2017 European championship title is not just the biggest success of Slovenian team sports, it is also the success that I as a fan experienced in the most emotional way to date," Vojnović was quoted in the press release as saying.

"No other sporting success has touched me so deeply. And I know I am not the only one to cry the tears of joy when I think of Istanbul two years ago," he said.

Vojnović finds it important to put the story on film while the emotions are still strong and memories fresh, so he hopes to capture the great moments to "make a film that will take us all back to Istanbul".

The release date has not yet been announced, but the film, according to the Basketball Association, is expected to be ready for release next year.

First interviews with the basketball champions have already been shot, with the rest to follow in the coming months.

Slovenia started the EuroBasket as the first-placed team in Group A in Helsinki, eliminating Ukraine in the round of 16, defeating Latvia in the quarter-finals, outperforming Spain in the semi-finals and beating Serbia 93:85 in the final.
