Iberia will start to fly from Madrid to Ljubljana's Jože Pučnik International Airport and back on 28 July, operating four flights a week for five weeks.

EX-YU Aviation News says this is part of Ljubljana airport operator Fraport Slovenija's efforts to expand the number of flights and airlines to connect the airport with the Iberian Peninsula.

In the past, Ljubljana was connected with Madrid and Barcelona by Adria Airways, while budget airline Vueling operated the route to Barcelona in 2010.

There are also media reports about some other changes at Ljubljana airport after German-owned Adria Airways went into receivership at the end of September.

Air France, Aeroflot, British Airways and Montenegro Airlines are expected to double the number of their flights to Ljubljana next summer season.

From 22 May to 26 September, British Airways will fly to London's Heathrow four times a week next summer, as opposed to twice this summer.

Air France will operate the Ljubljana-Paris route twice a day, just as many times as Aeroflot will connect Ljubljana and Moscow in the 2020 summer season.

Montenegro Airlines will fly Ljubljana-Podgorica six times a week and Finland's Finnair once a day between Helsinki and Ljubljana.

Lufthansa, having taken over Adira's flights to Frankfurt and Munich, will introduce a morning flight to Frankfurt on 29 March, with the return flight scheduled for 8:30pm.

Brussels Airlines will increase the number of its Ljubljana-Brussels flights from six to seven a week.

However, no morning flight is planned to Brussels, which is very convenient for officials attending EU meetings there.

Fraport Slovenija is also said to be seeking airlines to fly to Prague, Skopje and Copenhagen.

A further rise in flights is expected in 2021, when the airport should fully compensate for the loss of passengers resulting from Adria's bankruptcy.
