Betetto, born in 1962, was elected the new president at the CCJE's plenary session last November in Strasbourg.

At the time, she said the CCJE was an important institution for the rule of law.

Judge Kim Lewison from Great Britain was elected CCJE vice president, a two-year office Betetto held previously.

Betetto graduated in law in Ljubljana in 1985 and earned her master's degree in 1994. In 2006, she became a Supreme Court judge and has been a CCJE member since 2009.

In 2016, she was one of Slovenia's three candidates for a judge of the European Court of Human Rights.

The CCJE is an advisory body of the Council of Europe on issues relating to the independence, impartiality and competence of judges.

Its members are practising judges from 47 Council of Europe member states.
