Cancelling the qualifiers on Friday, the executive committee of the European Handball Federation (EHF) decided that the ten slots are awarded to the teams which finished 4-13 at the European Men's Handball Championship this January.

Slovenia finished fourth at the tournament in Sweden and did not make it to the world championship directly as slots were reserved only for the medal winners.

Besides Slovenia, other European teams to play at the 2021 World Men's Handball Championship, to be held in Egypt on 14-31 January, are Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, France, Spain, Croatia, Norway, Denmark, Belarus, Iceland and the Czech Republic.

The EHF also cancelled the qualifiers for the 2020 European Women's Handball Championship, to be held in Denmark and Norway on 3-20 December, and the Slovenian team has automatically made it to the tournament based on its result at the 2018 European championship.

The men's team is also in play for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with the qualifying tournament with Germany, France, Norway, Portugal and Sweden being moved to 6-9 January 2021.
