The life expectancy at birth is expected to get longer and the elderly, aged 65 or more, will account for more than 31% of the population, compared to almost 20% in 2019, the Statistics Office reported based on the EUROPOP2019 projections, which had been drawn up for all member states as well as Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Slovenia's number of residents is expected to keep increasing until 2024 roughly, with the peak figure totalling some 2,116,000. Approximately after 2024, the population will start gradually decreasing.

At the start of 2100, Slovenia will record some 1,888,000 residents or 10% less than in 2019, the starting year of the projections.

The projections estimate that Slovenia will see 5,300 more immigrants than emigrants in 2100 - a migratory increase that is two thirds fewer than the 2019 figure.

The natality rate is supposed to be growing steadily in the future and stand at 1.72 in 2100. Life expectancy for boys born in 2100 will be 89 years and 93 years for girls.

The share of children, persons younger than 15, will be declining for a number of years and will reach the lowest point in 2037 (12.5%). In 2100, children are supposed to account for 13.5% of the population.
