Roglič loses red jersey at the Vuelta

Sport

Ljubljana - Ecuadorian rider Richard Carapaz took the Vuelta a Espana overall leader's red jersey from defending champion Primož Roglič after Spaniard Ion Izagirre won Sunday's sixth stage in fog and rain in the Pyrenees.

Finishing 20th today with a lag of 38 seconds behind Izagirre, the Slovenian Jumbo-Visma rider fell to fourth overall, but remains in contention for the overall lead with a 30-second lag behind Carapaz, a Ineos Grenadiers rider, should the race proceed.

The Giro d'Italia 2019 winner, Carapaz was 12th through the finish line, 55 seconds behind the stage winner, who rides for Astana.

The best of the favourites today, Briton Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) advanced to second overall, with a lag of 18 seconds. Irish Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) is third, 20 seconds behind the overall leader.

After a day off and a new round of coronavirus testing, the continuation of the race is uncertain after a state of emergency was declared for the whole of Spain from Sunday due to the pandemic.
