Sport

Dresden- Fresh from being declared Slovenian female athlete of the year, cross-country runner Anamarija Lampič finished third in Saturday's World Cup sprint in Dresden, Germany.

The top three finish came even though Lampič lost a pole soon after the start and was forced to run with one pole for a part of the race.

She initially dropped to last place in the final but managed to make up lost time by the finish line for her seventh career podium.

Switzerland's Nadine Fähndrich won the race ahead of the American Sophie Caldwell Hamilton.

Having finished second in the previous sprint event in Davos, Lampič now places second in the World Cup sprint rankings, four points behind Fähndrich.

She is fifth in the overall World Cup standings.
