Ljubljana - The Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has approved EU funding for five cycling path projects in Slovenia. The European Regional Development Fund will chip in a total of EUR 6.7 million.

In one of the biggest projects, a regional cycling route will link Kamnik, Mengeš, Trzin and Ljubljana in a project valued at EUR 3.8 million, almost EUR 2.5 million of which will come from the EU fund.

Run by the Kamnik municipality, the project aims to allow the population to commute daily to work or school between the four municipalities in a sustainable way.

The investment comprises 13.7 kilometres of cycling links, of which 6.5 kilometres will be new or reconstructed cycling paths.

The Kočevje municipality in the south was approved just over EUR 2.5 million for an EUR 4 million project to build 5.23 kilometres of new cycling paths in and around Kočevje.

EUR 492,000 in EU funds was allocated for a EUR 1.5 million project to build 1.7 km of cycling paths and pavements as part of the reconstruction of the Ptuj Road in Miklavž na Dravskem Polju (NE).

The municipality of Železniki in the north-west was approved just over a million euro in EU funds for a EUR 1.6 million to tend to 7.05 km of cycling paths, of which 4.29 km will be built anew.

EUR 241,000 was allocated for the Apače municipality on the Austrian border to build a missing 2.7 km section of an 11 km cycling path linking Gornja Radgona with Žepovci. The project is valued at EUR 700,000.
