Jakov Fak among ambassadors of IBU environmental project
Ljubljana - The most successful Slovenian biathlete Jakov Fak has been appointed one of the ten ambassadors of International Biathlon Union's (IBU) Biathlon Climate Challenge, an environmental project that aims to plant 100,000 trees as part of the IBU's sustainability programme.
"I was happy to receive the invitation. Since this is a traditional winter sport, we take part in the fight against global warming. Less snow means more difficulties to our sport," told Fak, when asked why he had joined the campaign.
The project connects an active lifestyle with climate action. "Our fans can track the kilometres they cover by walking, running, cycling or swimming, using a special app called Active Giving. The number of kilometres then determines how many trees will be planted."
"For each tree planted, users must run five kilometres, walk or cycle ten kilometres, swim one kilometre, or perform any physical activity with which they burn at least 200 kcal."
To promote the project, Fak also went ski touring on Kredarica this weekend. He was surprised by the amount of snow, but also described it as a very difficult training.
He is currently preparing for the 2021/22 Olympic season. Since the beginning of May, he has resumed his usual regiment of two trainings per day. Even on the day when he spoke for the STA, he did 50 kilometres on roller skis in the morning.
