Fundraising campaign for STA ending
Ljubljana - A month-long fundraising campaign by the Association of Slovenian Journalists (DNS), which has raised EUR 264,500 for the Slovenian Press Agency (STA), is coming to a close. Donations via SMS are no longer possible, but if anyone wishes to donate, they could still do that by bank transfer until the end of June.
The amount raised has exceeded expectations, the DNS said, thanking all those who have made a donation. "We'd like to thank all the friends of the STA for taking action and showing that quality and credible journalism is still what they want," said the DNS, which also thanked all of the journalists who supported the cause and STA staff for not giving up.
The association congratulated the STA on its 30th anniversary, which the agency will mark in June. It also submitted today to President Borut Pahor arguments in support of its proposal to decorate the STA on the occasion.
The campaign was launched on World Press Freedom Day on 3 May in a bid to secure funding for the STA, which has not received budget funds for the performance of public service for five months.
The donations would help the agency survive until the anniversary, said the STA management, noting that the people's response to the campaign and contributions topped expectations.
The outcome of the campaign, indicating broad support from the public, has given the STA staff a fresh impetus, lifting them up to make it easier for them to continue performing public service, which is one of the pillars of professional journalism in Slovenia, the STA management said in a press release.
The agency thanked all those who contributed to the campaign, including the DNS. Individuals and companies can still make a donation via bank wire transfer, by purchasing STA apparel or by taking out a subscription to the STA services.
