Sport

Tokyo - Slovenian Olympic sailors Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol finished fifth in the 470 class at the Tokyo Olympics, losing one more place (69 points) after the final medal race, in which they finished seventh. The gold was won by Britain's Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre (37 points).

Poland's Agnieszka Skrzypulec and Jolanta Ogar finished second, while France's Aloise Retornaz and Camille Lecointre finished third.

Slovenian sailors Mrak and Macarol started the final medal race in fourth place, nine points behind third and 13 behind second place.

But they did not manage to start the medal race well and finished in seventh place. Thus, they lost another place in the overall standings and ended up finishing fifth.

This was the last event in sailing at the Tokyo Olympic Games, and the last ever in the 470 class for separate men's and women's crews; starting in Paris 2024, there will only be mixed teams competing in the 470 class.

This event was also the end of an era in Slovenian sailing marked by Mrak and Macarol, the best Slovenian sailors of the last decade.

Before the Tokyo Games, the sailors had not talked publicly about their future plans, including the possibility of competing in the Olympics again in a new mixed crew. They were only focused on their last performance in the 470 class.

This class has seen the highest number of Slovenian Olympic sailing performances, with Mrak and Macarol finishing sixth at the previous Olympic Games in Rio. They were in contention for a medal the whole time.

They also achieved several great results and honours in major competitions and entered the list of the most successful Slovenian sailing crews ever.
