Slovenia sends firefighters to N Macedonia

Politics

Ljubljana - Slovenia has deployed a civil protection unit and 16 vehicles to North Macedonia to help fight wildfires there in response to the country's asking for help through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

According to a post on the government's Twitter profile, Slovenia sent 46 members of civil protection specialising in fighting wildfires with 16 vehicles.

The pictures posted with the message show the vehicles include fire engines.

This was as several EU member countries provided equipment and assistance to Italy, Greece, Albania and North Macedonia in fighting devastating wildfires, including firefighting aircraft, both fixed-wing and helicopters.

Aid is provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism where the European Commission subsidises at least 75% of the transport costs.

The EU is also helping fight fires in Turkey.
