Contemporary dance festival defies pandemic and Brexit

Culture

Murska Sobota - The Front@ festival is bringing over 30 events to the city of Murska Sobota, starting today under the slogan Despite Everything - in the Trenches of Pandemic and Brexit. It will feature dance productions from Great Britain, France, Spain, South Korea and Slovenia, as well as exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and talks with the artists.

The organisers are happy that the festival hosts dancers from abroad, that they have overcome not just coronavirus obstacles but also political and Brexit obstacles, which have all made international cooperation in art very hard, artistic director Matjaž Farič said on Friday.

Running until 27 August, the 16th Front@ will open with BLKDOG, a production by English group Far From The Norm of choreographer Botis Seva, which was a success in London a year ago.

French choreographer Yoann Bourgeois's "acclaimed impression" Fugue will also be shown, while British choreographer and dancer Theo Clinkard will give a workshop.

Slovenian dancer and choreographer Sanja Nešković Peršin will present her intimate project Point. Of No Return, which will be performed for each visitor separately.

Slovenia's acclaimed group EnKnap will present Stage 360, a special project enabling visitors to watch selected parts of the show from the centre of the venue with the help of the technology which has so far been known only in computer games.

A novelty this year are longer productions and reruns to better suit the epidemiological situation, while the festival will also showcase young dancers who have been selected at an international competition in Celje.
