It is well known that in the first edition of the score of the Pastoral Symphony Beethoven wrote that the work is "more an expression of emotion than [sound] painting". It is possible that Beethoven found part of his inspiration in Justin Heinrich Knechat's composition A Musical Portrait of Nature, in which the composer attempts to illustrate the peaceful countryside, an unexpected storm and gratitude at the end of the storm.
