Ljubljana - Another 666 people tested positive for coronavirus in Slovenia on Wednesday to push the number of active cases to over 6,000 as three Covid-19 patients died, official data shows.

The National Institute of Public Health estimates there are currently 6,045 active cases in the country, up from 5,756 the day before.

The 7-day average of new daily cases has increased to 491 and the 14-day incidence per 100,000 residents to 283.

Yesterday, 18.4% of the PCR tests came back positive as the daily case count was up by almost a third from the week before.

Government data shows the number of Covid-19 hospitalisations rising to 162 this morning, with 40 patients now in intensive care. The youngest patient in intensive care is 21.

Three patients died yesterday with the figures in the table released by the Health Ministry putting the overall death total from Covid-19 to 4,781.

As the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) updated its Covid-19 colour-coded map of Europe on Thursday, Slovenia turned red like most of western Europe. North Italy and Croatia's coast remain orange.

Areas change to red when the 14-day incidence per 100,000 residents is between 75 and 200 and the test positivity rate is 4% or more; or the incidence is between 200 and 500.

The latest government data shows 995,030 people or 47% of the Slovenian population have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and 907,873 or 43% have been fully vaccinated.

Among the adult population, 51% have been fully vaccinated, while 64% are fully inoculated among over 50s.
