"It is a great feeling to cross the line first. I was a little behind after the first two shooting ranges, but I fought in the running part and managed to win it," the 25-year-old said in a statement for public broadcaster Radio Slovenija.

This is the first world championship or Olympic medal for the Croatian-born Fak since he joined the Slovenian team in 2011.

Prime Minister Janez Janša congratulated Fak, stressing that his complete dedication to biathlon, hard work and the invested energy had paid off today.

Adding to Slovenia's success today was Klemen Bauer, who finished fifth, 16.6 seconds behind Fak.

Slovenia took the silver in the mixed relay event in Ruhpolding on Thursday, while Fak finished eight in the pursuit event and 11th in the sprint event.
