European Parliament fact-finding mission visiting Slovenia

Daily news

Ljubljana - A fact-finding mission of the European Parliament will be in Slovenia from Wednesday to Friday to examine the state of the rule of law, media freedom and fight against corruption. The MEPs will meet representatives of the national authorities, civil society and the media, while a meeting with PM Janez Janša is not on the agenda.

The mission will feature seven members of the LIBE committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs, one from each political group in the European Parliament, and one member from the committee on budgetary control.

The largest group, the European People's Party (EPP), will be represented by Slovenian MEP Romana Tomc, a member of the ruling Democrats (SDS), who has told the STA she has no particular expectations about the mission.

"It is a political mission directed against the current government. In line with this, one cannot expect anything more than political statements," she added.

The delegation is headed by Dutch MEP Sophie in 't Veld (Renew), head of the DRFMG monitoring group for democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights.

The agenda includes meetings with NGOs, the human rights ombudsman, representatives of the academia, journalists and organisations promoting freedom of the press, and the former president of the Association of Prosecutors of Slovenia.

Meetings with officials from the ministries of justice and culture, with a representative of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption, MPs, president of the National Council and presidents of the Constitutional Court and Court of Audit are also scheduled.

The fact-finding mission will not meet Prime Minister Janez Janša and none of the government ministers are scheduled for meetings.

The main topics of discussion are expected to include the non-appointment of the European delegated prosecutors in Slovenia and media freedom, including the (non-)financing of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA).
