Ljubljana - Slovenians marked the Day of Remembrance of the Death, or All Saints' Day, on Monday by visiting graves to pay respects to the dead. Senior Slovenian officials meanwhile laid wreaths at memorials to the victims of wars and war-related violence.

President Borut Pahor laid a wreath at the memorial to all victims of war and war-related violence at the main state commeoration in Congress Square in Ljubljana.

The event also featured Speaker Igor Zorčič, Deputy PM and Defence Minister Matej Tonin, National Council President Alojz Kovšca, Major General Robert Glavaš, the chief of the general staff, and Police Commissioner Anton Olaj.

The memorial, erected in July 2016 to promote reconciliation, became the site of 1 November wreath-laying state commemorations in 2018, while it is also the memorial at which foreign heads of state on official visits here lay a wreath.

Following the main commemoration, Speaker Zorčič headed to Žale cemetery to lay wreaths at the memorial to those who were killed in the independence war in 1991, at the memorial to those killed during WWII, at the linden tree of reconciliation, and the WWI ossuary.

Government and local government officials are paying respects to the dead at various memorials around the country on today's work-free public holiday.
